Every bonsai pot begins with an idea. Sometimes it’s inspired by one of our own designs, while in other cases it’s created specifically for a particular bonsai as a custom commission.

The pot is then built completely by hand. Every wall, corner, curve and foot is carefully shaped and refined. It is during this stage that the pot begins to develop its own unique character.

Then comes the waiting. Ceramics require patience. The pot must dry slowly and evenly to prevent stress within the clay. Only when it has dried sufficiently is it ready for its first firing.

 

The Fire Has the Final Say

After the first firing, the pot is either carefully glazed or intentionally left unglazed before returning to the kiln for its final firing.

This is perhaps the most exciting stage of the entire process.

The interaction between clay, glaze, temperature and the atmosphere inside the kiln means that every pot develops in its own unique way. Colours deepen, subtle nuances emerge and unexpected effects sometimes appear—details that can never be predicted with complete certainty.

During drying or firing, a pot may crack or warp. Occasionally, the final result simply doesn’t meet our own quality standards, and we start again from the beginning.

For this reason, we always recommend placing custom orders well in advance. Not because the process can’t be done more quickly, but because true craftsmanship takes time.
